Great Board Games for Teens (That They'll Actually Want to Play)

Brian Vienneau|

Teens can be tough to please when it comes to board games. Some want fast-paced chaos and a little bit of sabotage. Others prefer chill games with clever strategies and minimal conflict. The good news? There are some fantastic games out there that strike the right balance and get teens off their screens (at least for a while). Here are a few that have worked well in our family:

🎲 Machi Koro

We like to call this Japanese Monopoly—but don’t worry, it’s way more fun and much faster. Players build up their city by purchasing buildings that trigger when specific dice rolls come up. The cool twist? Some of your buildings activate on other players' turns, so there’s rarely any downtime. It’s light, engaging, and has just enough luck and strategy to keep everyone hooked.

⛳ Play Nine

This one flies under the radar, but it’s a hidden gem. Play Nine is a golf-themed card game where players try to get the lowest score possible by swapping, revealing, and remembering their cards. It's easy to learn, quick to play, and surprisingly addictive. Perfect for a family game night or as a break between heavier games.

🗺️ Clank!

For teens who like a bit of tension and adventure, Clank! is a winner. You sneak into a dungeon to steal treasure—but make too much noise and the dragon will come after you. It’s a deck-building game with just enough danger to keep the table on edge. Plus, there's a nice balance between strategy and playful risk-taking, which teens tend to love.
