Heading camping, to the cottage, or planning a rainy day at the cabin? Here are 10 great board games and card games that are easy to pack, quick to teach, and fun to play around the picnic table.
Love Letter / Jabba’s Palace
-
Players: 2–6
-
Time: 15 mins
Love Letter is a staple for my camping trips. You only ever hold one or two cards, meaning you don't need to fight for table space or worry about complex setups. Rounds fly by, so people can drift in and out of the game without feeling trapped in a marathon session.
If you love Star Wars, grab Jabba’s Palace instead. It uses the exact same mechanics but adds a thematic twist. This was actually one of the very first games I brought to a campsite, and it instantly hooked my group.
Trio
-
Players: 3–6
-
Time: 15 mins
Trio is incredibly simple to teach. On your turn, you ask opponents for cards, which makes it feel a bit like Go Fish at first. The clever twist? You can only ask for a player's highest or lowest card. You can also flip cards face-up from the center of the table to find sets of three matching numbers.
Don't let the Go Fish comparison fool you. There is a surprising amount of memory and strategy packed into this tiny box. It is perfect for camping because you can abandon the game at a moment's notice if the campfire needs attention.
Skip-Bo
-
Players: 2–6
-
Time: 20+ mins
Skip-Bo is a nostalgic classic that most families already know how to play. Your main goal is to empty your personal stockpile by building sequential stacks of cards from 1 to 12.
We play this constantly at our campsite. Because the rules are so familiar, it requires very little brainpower. It can drag a bit with larger player counts, but it is the ultimate choice when you want a relaxed, breezy evening.
Dutch Blitz
-
Players: 2–4
-
Time: 10–15 mins
Dutch Blitz is fast, frantic, and wonderfully chaotic. Everyone plays at the same time, racing to empty their deck by placing cards in numerical order in the center of the table. It takes a round or two for beginners to find the rhythm, but it quickly turns loud and fiercely competitive.
Pack this if your family loves high-energy speed games. Just warning you: it requires focus, fast reflexes, and a sturdy picnic table that can handle some aggressive card-slapping.
Lure
-
Players: 2–5
-
Time: 15 mins
Lure fits the outdoor vibe perfectly because it is literally about fishing. It feels right at home on a picnic table or sitting out on a cabin deck.
The gameplay relies on clever blind bidding. You secretly hide a handful of dice in your fist. Choosing fewer dice lets you take your turn earlier, but rolling more dice increases your odds of catching fish. It blends bluffing and push-your-luck mechanics into a tiny, travel-friendly package.
Play Nine
-
Players: 2–6
-
Time: 20–45 mins
Play Nine is a casual card game with a light golf theme. The goal is to finish with the lowest score by strategically swapping, discarding, and flipping over cards in your grid.
You don't need to know anything about actual golf to enjoy this one. It hits the perfect sweet spot for multigenerational family trips, keeping both kids and grandparents entertained during quiet evening hours.
Exploding Kittens
-
Players: 2–5
-
Time: 15 mins
Think of Exploding Kittens as a goofy, card-based version of Russian roulette. You draw cards from the deck, praying you don't pull a bomb. If you do, and you don't have a Defuse card to save you, you are instantly eliminated.
The magic happens when you actually play a Defuse card. You get to secretly slide the Exploding Kitten back into the deck wherever you want. Watching the next player sweat as they draw a card you personally planted never gets old.
Flip 7
-
Players: 3–18
-
Time: 20 mins
Flip 7 is an absolute powerhouse for large campsite gatherings. The rules are dead simple: flip cards over one by one, stopping whenever you want. If you ever flip a duplicate number, you bust and lose everything.
While the box claims it accommodates up to 18 players, we tested it with a group of 10 and it hit the absolute sweet spot. It is a fantastic, stress-free option when you have a massive crowd gathered around the fire.
Qwirkle Travel
-
Players: 2–4
-
Time: 30 mins
Qwirkle Travel swaps out cards for chunky wooden tiles, making it the ultimate breezy-day game. You will never have to chase stray cards across a windy campground.
Players score points by matching shapes and colors in rows. It comes in a durable zippered pouch, giving you the weight and feel of a premium board game without the bulky box. It is easy for kids to grasp, yet deep enough to keep the adults competitive.
Chicken!
-
Players: 3–8
-
Time: 15 mins
Chicken! is a fast-paced dice roller packaged inside a compact plastic tube. The components are excellent, featuring vibrant custom dice and distinct fox tokens.
On your turn, you roll the dice to accumulate chickens while avoiding foxes. You can choose to lock in your score or push your luck to roll again. It is silly, loud, and takes up zero space, making it a great addition to your camp kitchen crate.
