A mysterious case has reached its final moment. The investigators are ready to accuse the criminal, but there’s one problem: the Phantom may be hiding among the suspects.

In Tricks and the Phantom, players use a tiny deck of cards to solve a quick deduction puzzle. Each round, players secretly choose cards, then try to figure out which card represents the real criminal. Usually, the culprit is the highest-numbered card, but special card conditions can change everything. One card might become the criminal only if a certain number appears. Another might matter only if the other cards are low.

You’ll need to watch what colours people played, think through the possible card effects, and decide who the real criminal is. But be careful: the Phantom is also in the mix, trying to lure investigators into choosing the wrong target. Guess the criminal correctly and you score points. Get tricked by the Phantom and things can turn against you.

Tricks and the Phantom is a quick deduction card game with bluffing, logic, and a neat little mystery packed into a tiny Oink Games box. It plays 2–4 players in about 15 minutes and is recommended for ages 9+. It was designed by Takashi Saito, with artwork by Jun Sasaki.

What We Think

We haven’t played Tricks and the Phantom yet, but this sounds like a clever little deduction game with a very small deck and a lot of room for second-guessing.

The fun seems to come from that moment where you think you’ve solved the case, then realize someone may have been baiting you toward the Phantom the whole time. It has the feel of a quick logic puzzle, but with just enough bluffing to make everyone at the table suspicious.

We like that it looks fast and compact, but not empty. A few cards, a few clues, and suddenly everyone is acting like a detective in a room full of unreliable hats.
