About the Product

You're building a zoo — but not the kind with balloon vendors and bored penguins. This is a scientifically managed conservation facility, and every animal you bring in, every enclosure you construct, and every partnership you forge moves you closer to a score that matters.

Ark Nova is one of the highest-rated board games ever made — sitting in the top 5 on BoardGameGeek with an 8.6 average rating — and it earns that reputation by doing something rare: making a complex, card-driven engine-building game feel intuitive once it gets going. The heart of it is a five-card action system where each card sits in a numbered slot from one to five. Play a card and it resets to slot one; everything else slides right. The higher the slot, the more powerful the action. Managing when to use an action now versus letting it build up for a bigger payoff is the constant tension that drives every decision.

Your five actions — Cards, Build, Animals, Association, and Sponsors — work together to populate a 212+ card ecosystem of animals, specialists, and conservation projects. You'll build enclosures on your personal zoo board, recruit ornithologists and herpetologists, partner with universities and zoos across the globe, and release animals into the wild for conservation points. Progress is tracked on two opposing tracks — Appeal and Conservation — moving toward each other until they meet or cross. That's your cue to score.

This is a game for people who want a lot of game. It rewards multiple plays and adapts to every session through its enormous card pool and variable setup. Two players is the sweet spot for pace; four players is for the patient.

What We Think at WiredVillage Boardgames

This is a great game if you have the time and want to dive deep into the strategy of building a zoo. You’ll need to carefully balance your conservation goals with zoo appeal. The game is beautifully designed, with tons of unique animals and project cards that offer incredible variety. I enjoy the challenge of trying to obtain the cards to meet the various objectives, and knowing when things don’t go as planned. Money is tight, and you have to balance building enclosures and working to get the animals you want. There are many viable strategies, and every game feels a little different.

Game Mechanisms

Action Card Selection Ark Nova's signature system puts five action cards in a numbered row in front of you. When you play a card, it goes back to slot one — and every card to its right slides one spot over. A card in slot five is five times more powerful than the same card in slot one. Planning two or three moves ahead to ensure your most-needed action is sitting at the high end of the row when you need it is the game's central puzzle, and it never gets old.

Hand Management Your hand is your zoo's future. Animals, sponsors, and conservation projects sit in your hand waiting for the right moment — the right enclosure, the right budget, the right combination of icons already in play. The game rarely punishes you for holding cards, but it constantly tempts you to build toward the combos you can see coming. The 212-card deck means those combos are never the same twice.

Tile Placement Your zoo board is a hex grid that starts empty and fills in as you build enclosures, kiosks, and pavilions. Enclosures must match the space requirements of the animals you want to house — a large predator needs a large enclosure, placed on the right hex. Planning your zoo layout to accommodate future animals while not boxing yourself in is a satisfying spatial puzzle running beneath everything else.

Engine Building Early turns in Ark Nova feel slow. Mid-game, they don't. As you recruit specialists, upgrade your action cards, establish partner zoos, and populate your enclosures, the system accelerates. An ornithologist gives you money every time you play a bird. A generous sponsor funds your next three animals. A university partner raises your hand limit. By the final stretch, a single well-timed action can chain into half a dozen effects — and that moment of feeling your engine fire is what players come back for.

Set Collection Conservation points — the harder of the two scoring tracks to advance — come from completing conservation projects, releasing animals, and building relationships with partner institutions. Each project has specific requirements: certain animal types, certain icons, certain geographic regions represented in your zoo. Quietly building toward multiple projects simultaneously, then completing several in rapid succession, is one of the game's most satisfying strategic lines.
